AfD Win Sends Shockwaves Across Germany and Europe

AfD election victory

The AfD election victory in Saxony-Anhalt has triggered a major political debate in Germany and across Europe, with analysts describing the result as a turning point for the country’s political landscape.

The anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured a striking result in Sunday’s regional election, although it fell short of winning an outright majority. Despite Saxony-Anhalt having only about 1.7 million eligible voters out of roughly 59 million across Germany, the outcome carries implications far beyond the state itself.

AfD election victory increases pressure on Merz

The result is expected to increase pressure on Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his centrist coalition government in Berlin. Merz had pledged to reduce the AfD’s growing popularity, but the party’s strong performance suggests that its support remains a significant challenge for Germany’s political mainstream.

The political difficulties come at a sensitive moment for Germany, Europe’s largest economy and one of its most influential powers. The government is already dealing with pressure linked to Russia’s war against Ukraine, trade tensions involving the United States and economic competition from China.

The AfD’s breakthrough is also particularly significant because of Germany’s history. The party has been classified in part by German authorities as anti-democratic, while some of its regional branches, including its organization in Saxony-Anhalt, have been designated far-right extremist.

The party has traditionally enjoyed particularly strong support in eastern Germany and is now also polling as the largest political force nationally.

Russia and the AfD’s growing influence

The election result quickly attracted attention outside Germany. US President Donald Trump shared the Saxony-Anhalt exit poll on Truth Social, while Russian businessman Kirill Dmitriev described the result as “historic” and said Germany’s national government had been discredited.

The reaction from Moscow is significant because the AfD has taken positions that differ sharply from Germany’s current approach to Russia. The party has called for an end to military assistance to Ukraine, an end to sanctions against Moscow and a return to cheaper Russian energy imports.

Germany is one of Ukraine’s largest supporters, making Berlin a major target of Russian criticism. The disruption of Russian energy supplies has also contributed to economic difficulties for German industries that previously relied heavily on those imports.

The AfD’s position on Russia can also appeal to voters in eastern Germany, where economic conditions remain weaker than in the west. Saxony-Anhalt is Germany’s poorest region, and some voters continue to express “Ostalgie”, or nostalgia for aspects of life under the former communist system.

Election result alarms European leaders AfD election victory

The AfD election victory is also being closely watched by the European Union as several major European countries prepare for elections over the coming year.

Nationalist and anti-immigration parties have been gaining ground in several countries, increasing concerns in Brussels about political fragmentation at a time when Europe faces pressure over security, trade and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Spain’s Vox leader Santiago Abascal described the AfD’s performance as “a great hope for Germany and for Europe”. France’s Europe Minister Benjamin Haddad, however, called the result a serious development for Europe because a far-right party had won a regional election in Germany.

European nationalist parties do not share identical policies or political programmes, and many reject descriptions such as “far right” or “hard right”. However, opposition to immigration and strong nationalist messaging are common features among several of them.

The rise of these parties has raised concerns that growing nationalism could make it harder for European countries to maintain a common position on major issues.

AfD election victory Voters demand change from mainstream parties

The significance of the Saxony-Anhalt election extends beyond the AfD’s vote share. The result reflects wider dissatisfaction among voters who feel that established political parties have failed to address concerns about immigration, personal security, healthcare and economic stability.

Europeans are also increasingly concerned about the effects of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the broader economic pressures affecting households.

For traditional political parties and European institutions, the AfD election victory therefore represents a warning that voters are becoming more willing to consider parties that have never governed at the national level.

The AfD’s campaign message in Saxony-Anhalt, “Anything is Possible!”, was accompanied by a promise to restore national pride. Its strong performance indicates that a growing number of voters are prepared to give the party an opportunity to demonstrate what it could achieve in government.
