Arsenal vs PSG: Why Is The Champions League Final Starting Earlier?
The UEFA Champions League final takes place on Saturday as defending champions Paris Saint-Germain face Arsenal in Budapest in one of the most highly anticipated matches of the season.
The French giants, managed by Luis Enrique, are aiming to retain the trophy they won so emphatically last year after crushing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final in Munich.
Arsenal, meanwhile, arrive full of confidence after edging Atletico Madrid in a fiercely contested semi-final and securing the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City under Mikel Arteta.
The two clubs also met in last season’s Champions League semi-finals, where PSG advanced 3-1 on aggregate. Arsenal will now hope to gain revenge on the biggest stage in European football.
Why Is The Final Kicking Off Earlier?
UEFA has confirmed that this year’s final will begin at 5pm BST on 30 May three hours earlier than the traditional 8pm BST kick-off used in previous seasons.
The governing body explained that the change was introduced to improve the overall experience for supporters, players, broadcasters, and the host city.
In a statement, UEFA said:
“The decision is intended to improve the overall matchday experience for fans, teams, and host cities by optimising logistics and operations while delivering several practical benefits.
“Our objective is to make the occasion more enjoyable for everyone attending the event, while also creating a family-friendly atmosphere that allows more children and families to experience the biggest club football match of the season.”
UEFA also stated that the earlier start would help travelling supporters by improving access to public transport after the game and allowing safer journeys home.
The organisation believes the schedule adjustment will also benefit host cities economically by giving fans more time to continue celebrations after the match.
In addition, UEFA explained that the new kick-off slot creates a more accessible global broadcasting window, particularly for younger viewers watching around the world.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin also supported the move, saying:
“The Champions League final is the highlight of the football season, and this new kick-off time will make the event more accessible and inclusive for everyone involved.
“An earlier start on a Saturday means supporters can enjoy the remainder of the evening with friends and family, regardless of whether the match goes to extra time or penalties.”
How To Watch The Final
In the United Kingdom, the match will be shown live on TNT Sports 1, with coverage beginning at 7pm BST.
For the first time since the European Cup became the Champions League in 1992, the final will not be available free-to-air in the UK.
Viewers in the United States can watch the game live on CBS and stream it through Paramount+.
Spanish-language coverage will be available on Univision and TUDN, with streaming also accessible via Fubo.
The pre-match entertainment will feature rock band The Killers, following previous Champions League final performances from artists including Linkin Park and Lenny Kravitz.
