Cyprus Questions Future of British Military Bases After Drone Strike on RAF Akrotiri

Cyprus has raised concerns about the future of British military bases on the island following a recent drone strike on the RAF Akrotiri base, an incident that has heightened tensions in the eastern Mediterranean.

The attack occurred in early March when a drone believed to be linked to Iran or its regional allies struck the British air base located near Limassol. The strike caused limited damage and no casualties, but it marked the first attack on the facility in decades and sparked fears about Cyprus becoming involved in a wider regional conflict.

RAF Akrotiri is one of two sovereign military bases the United Kingdom maintains in Cyprus. The facility serves as a major hub for British operations in the Middle East and has been used in missions against extremist groups as well as in regional surveillance operations.

Following the drone strike, Cypriot officials criticised the UK for not communicating clearly about the risks posed by the base during the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Government representatives said the incident highlighted the need to reassess the long standing arrangements that allow Britain to operate military bases on the island.

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and other officials have suggested that discussions may be needed about the future of the bases, particularly if the island continues to face security threats linked to regional conflicts.

The strike occurred during escalating tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States. Analysts believe the drone may have been launched by Hezbollah, a group allied with Iran, as part of a wider campaign targeting Western military facilities in the region.

In response to the incident, Britain has strengthened security around its bases and is considering deploying additional military assets, including air defence systems and naval forces, to protect the facilities.

Despite the criticism, British officials have emphasised their commitment to Cyprus’s security and said the bases are essential for maintaining stability in the eastern Mediterranean and supporting international operations.

The drone strike has also alarmed residents living near the base, with some communities temporarily evacuating their homes due to fears of further attacks. Local authorities have warned that the island’s strategic location means it could face increased risks as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise.

Experts say the incident could trigger a broader debate about the role of foreign military bases in Cyprus and whether changes are needed to ensure the country does not become caught in conflicts beyond its borders.
