Dallaglio World Cup Medal Set for Auction

Dallaglio World Cup medal is among a collection of career memorabilia being put up for auction by former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio after he was declared bankrupt.

The 54-year-old is selling several items from his rugby career, including medals, trophies and caps. The collection is estimated to be worth £180,000 in total, with his 2003 Rugby World Cup winner’s medal expected to fetch between £50,000 and £80,000.

Dallaglio was a key member of the England team that secured the Rugby World Cup in 2003, beating Australia in a dramatic final. The victory remains one of the defining achievements of his international career.

Lawrence Dallaglio Bankruptcy Leads to Sale

The Dallaglio World Cup medal is one of several major pieces of memorabilia included in the auction. Other items being offered include a British and Irish Lions cap, his 1993 World Cup Sevens winner’s medal and his 2003 Six Nations Championship winner’s medal.

The sale comes after Dallaglio discussed his financial difficulties publicly during an appearance on The High Performance podcast earlier this month. He explained that his bankruptcy followed his divorce and acknowledged that he could have handled some financial matters differently.

“As a result of getting divorced, I was made bankrupt,” Dallaglio said.

“I had some financial problems – I could’ve done things a lot better.”

His comments provide the background to the decision to sell items that represent important moments from his rugby career. The collection includes honours from both his England career and his time with the British and Irish Lions.

2003 Rugby World Cup Medal Among Career Honours

The 2003 Rugby World Cup medal is expected to be the most valuable individual item in the collection, with an estimated auction price of £50,000 to £80,000.

Dallaglio’s success in 2003 came as part of an England team that produced a memorable World Cup campaign. His winner’s medal is now being offered alongside other significant pieces from his career, giving collectors an opportunity to acquire memorabilia connected to his international achievements.

The British and Irish Lions cap and 1993 World Cup Sevens winner’s medal also form part of the collection, while the 2003 Six Nations Championship winner’s medal adds another item from a successful period in his career.

Dallaglio also spoke about the personal impact of the events surrounding his divorce and bankruptcy. He said he sought therapy and described how he had been left wallowing in “self-pity” following those experiences.

The auction collection therefore brings together memorabilia from several stages of Dallaglio’s rugby career, with the 2003 Rugby World Cup medal carrying the highest individual estimated value.

With the full collection valued at about £180,000, the sale marks a significant moment for the former England captain as items from his illustrious playing career are put on the market.
