Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly rejected comments made by US President Donald Trump, after he claimed she had “begged” him to take a photograph with her during the recent G7 summit, triggering an unusually public dispute between the two leaders.
The controversy emerged after Trump, speaking in a telephone interview with Italian broadcaster La7, alleged that Meloni had pleaded for a picture with him. The remarks came despite the pair being seen in friendly discussions during the G7 gathering in Évian-les-Bains, France, where they were photographed together on multiple occasions and appeared engaged in lengthy conversations.
Responding to the comments, Meloni described the accusation as completely fabricated and said she was shocked by the US president’s remarks. Addressing millions of followers on social media, she stated that the claim was entirely untrue and questioned why Trump had chosen to speak about allies in such a manner.
The Italian leader added that while she regretted Trump’s attitude toward friendly nations, she believed he often appeared more accommodating toward those she described as adversaries of both the United States and the wider Western alliance. She stressed that neither she nor Italy would ever resort to begging for political favour.
The disagreement marks another setback in what was once considered a close political relationship. Meloni had been viewed as one of Trump’s strongest European partners and was notably the only European leader to attend his inauguration in January 2025. Many European officials had hoped she could serve as a bridge between Washington and European capitals.
However, relations have cooled significantly in recent months. Meloni openly criticised the US military campaign against Iran, while Trump later questioned her political courage in media interviews. Tensions increased further when Meloni condemned Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV, describing his comments as unacceptable.
Following Trump’s latest remarks, support for Meloni quickly emerged across Italy’s political spectrum. Italian President Sergio Mattarella reportedly contacted the prime minister to express solidarity. Opposition figures and government allies alike condemned Trump’s language, arguing that Italy’s leader deserved greater respect on the international stage.
Lawmakers from the opposition Democratic Party described the comments as arrogant and inappropriate, while former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Italy should never compromise its dignity in pursuit of favour from Washington. Members of Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party also defended her, suggesting that video footage from the summit contradicted Trump’s version of events.
League party leader Matteo Salvini voiced his support, declaring that attacks on Meloni amounted to attacks on Italy itself.
Political observers view the dispute as part of a broader shift in transatlantic relations. European leaders who were once cautious about confronting Trump have become increasingly willing to challenge him publicly, particularly on issues such as Iran, defence policy and international security. Analysts note that concerns over US reliability have prompted renewed discussions across Europe about pursuing a more independent strategic path.
The latest clash between Trump and Meloni highlights growing strains between Washington and several European capitals, underscoring how alliances that once appeared stable are increasingly being tested by disagreements over foreign policy and global security.
