England launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas, overcoming defensive lapses with a powerful attacking display to secure all three points in Group L.
Thomas Tuchel’s side made a strong start and took the lead in the 12th minute through Harry Kane. The England captain converted a penalty at the second attempt after Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was judged to have moved off his line when saving the initial effort. The spot-kick was awarded after veteran midfielder Luka Modric brought down Noni Madueke inside the area.
Croatia responded positively and found an equaliser in the 36th minute. Martin Baturina unleashed a fierce strike from distance that beat Jordan Pickford despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball. The goal highlighted Croatia’s ability to threaten England whenever opportunities arose.
England restored their advantage shortly before the interval when Kane powered home a header from a Declan Rice corner. The goal was Kane’s 81st for his country and moved him level with Gary Lineker on 10 FIFA World Cup goals.
However, Croatia struck back again just before half-time. A well-worked move ended with Ivan Perisic providing a headed assist for Petar Musa, who calmly finished past Pickford to make it 2-2 heading into the break.
The Three Lions regained control moments after the restart. Jude Bellingham justified his selection with a driving run and clinical finish that restored England’s lead. The Real Madrid midfielder’s energy and quality helped England dominate large portions of the second half.
Despite Croatia’s efforts to stay in the contest, England continued to create chances and eventually sealed the victory late on. Substitute Marcus Rashford applied the finishing touch with a composed strike five minutes from time, ensuring Tuchel’s men began their World Cup journey with an important win.
England’s attack looked sharp throughout the contest, with Kane leading the way alongside standout performances from Bellingham and Madueke. However, Tuchel will be concerned by defensive weaknesses that allowed Croatia to score twice and create several dangerous moments.
For Croatia, it was a disappointing evening despite showing flashes of quality. Modric endured a difficult match, conceding the early penalty before being substituted in the second half as England’s intensity increased. Nevertheless, Zlatko Dalic’s side demonstrated enough attacking threat to remain optimistic about their chances of progressing from the group.
Kane was named Player of the Match after scoring twice and delivering another captain’s performance on football’s biggest stage. His early contribution places him among the tournament’s leading scorers alongside stars such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot.
England will next face Ghana, while Croatia take on Panama as both teams continue their Group L campaigns at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
