Jetstar Overhead Locker Fees 1 Major Baggage Policy Shift

Jetstar Overhead Locker Fees

SYDNEY – Jetstar overhead locker fees news has sparked widespread discussion across the travel industry after the low-cost airline announced a sweeping overhaul of its cabin baggage policy. Starting on February 2, 2027, the Qantas-owned budget carrier will begin charging passengers between $25 and $52 per flight to store standard carry-on bags in overhead lockers. Consequently, the airline’s traditional base fare will transition to a size-based model that only includes one small underseat personal item.

Under the revised system, passengers are permitted to bring a single small bag—such as a backpack, handbag, or laptop case—free of charge, provided it fits completely underneath the seat in front of them. However, travellers who wish to bring a conventional wheeled cabin suitcase for the overhead compartments must pre-purchase the new Priority Carry-on option. Chief Executive Stephanie Tully explained that the structural change follows extensive research and feedback from both customers and cabin crew. The updated rules aim to eliminate the common airport stress of weighing bags at boarding gates and scrambling for limited overhead storage space, ultimately helping flights depart more punctually.

Crucially, the airline will lift its familiar 7kg weight limit for carry-on luggage, replacing it with a practical size-based approach. While cabin baggage scales will no longer be routinely used at boarding gates, passengers are still asked to keep their overhead bags to approximately 10kg and ensure they are physically able to lift them into the storage bins unassisted. Priority Carry-on pricing starts from $25 each way depending on the specific route, and includes early boarding privileges to make the storage process smoother.

Consumer groups and budget travelers have expressed mixed reactions regarding the announcement. While solo travellers packing light may benefit from simpler fare structures, passengers taking longer trips will need to carefully calculate whether pre-purchasing priority locker space or checking a bag offers better overall value. Ultimately, this major shift redefines how budget passengers pack for domestic and international flights across the network.
