Man City Make Adam Wharton Enquiry

Adam Wharton

Manchester City have made an enquiry about Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as they search for options to strengthen their midfield following Rodri’s move to Barcelona.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, City contacted Palace about Wharton’s availability but were told the England international is not for sale during the current summer transfer window.

The response is a setback for Manchester City, who are looking for a player capable of helping fill the void created by Rodri’s departure after his seven-year spell at the Etihad Stadium.

Adam Wharton attracts Man City interest

Palace signed Wharton from Blackburn Rovers for an initial £18m in early 2024 when he was only 19.

Since then, the midfielder has developed into an important player for the Eagles. He has earned England recognition, approached 100 appearances for Palace and played a significant role in the club’s recent success in the Conference League and FA Cup.

His performances have also attracted interest from other major clubs, including Manchester United.

Despite the growing transfer speculation, Wharton has previously insisted that he does not allow rumours to distract him.

“There are always rumours floating about on social media,” he said last November, adding that he would not worry about potential moves unless there was concrete communication from another club.

Palace reject potential Wharton transfer

Wharton’s representatives have also indicated that the midfielder has a long-term development plan and is not in a hurry to leave Selhurst Park.

His agent James Featherstone previously said the player’s next steps would be handled through a structured approach rather than forcing an immediate transfer.

However, Champions League football remains an important ambition for Wharton.

Palace will compete in the Europa League this season, but if the club fails to reach Europe’s elite competition in the future, the midfielder could eventually consider moving to a team that regularly plays at the highest level.

Featherstone has previously argued that playing Champions League football at a top club can help a player establish himself at international level.

Rodri departure increases City’s need

Manchester City’s interest in Wharton comes after Rodri completed a move from the Etihad Stadium to Barcelona in a deal reported to be worth around £65m.

The Spain international became one of the most influential players in City’s midfield during his seven years at the club, making his replacement one of manager Pep Guardiola’s major recruitment challenges.

Wharton was reportedly one of the names considered by City’s recruitment team, but Palace’s decision means City will need to explore alternative targets.

For now, Palace have made their position clear: Adam Wharton is not available this summer.

The midfielder’s continued development at Selhurst Park will therefore be closely watched, particularly as Palace prepare for their Europa League campaign and Wharton continues to pursue his long-term ambition of playing in the Champions League.
