Odegaard Arsenal Form Boosts Champions League Hopes

Martin Odegaard has begun the new season in outstanding form, giving Arsenal renewed belief that they can challenge for both the Premier League and Champions League.

Arsenal came close to completing a historic double last season, winning the Premier League before losing the Champions League final to Paris St-Germain on penalties. Odegaard’s campaign was disrupted by knee and shoulder injuries, while inconsistent form limited his influence.

The 27-year-old Norwegian has now returned to full fitness and appears determined to make a greater impact as Arsenal attempt to build on last season’s success.

Odegaard Decides Arsenal’s Champions League Opener

Odegaard produced another decisive moment as Arsenal defeated Napoli 1-0 in their opening Champions League match.

Arsenal controlled much of the contest and created numerous opportunities, but it was their captain who finally broke Napoli’s resistance with a superb left-footed strike 15 minutes from full-time.

The result was particularly significant given Arsenal’s demanding Champions League schedule, which includes a home meeting with Real Madrid and an away trip to Bayern Munich.

Arsenal’s dominance was reflected in their 26 attempts on goal, their highest total in a Champions League match since records began in 2003-04. It was also the most shots Napoli had conceded in the competition during that period.

Odegaard Has Started the Season Strongly

Odegaard’s improved performances have been evident since the beginning of the campaign.

He scored an audacious goal during Arsenal’s 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City in Cardiff, showing remarkable composure by sitting down goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma before finishing into an empty net.

He then found the net in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Coventry City before scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 comeback victory against Chelsea at Emirates Stadium.

Against Chelsea, Odegaard made an intelligent run into the penalty area, timed his movement perfectly and reacted to Kai Havertz’s clever dummy before producing a powerful finish past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

His goal against Napoli continued that impressive run and underlined how influential he can be when fully fit and confident.

‘When Odegaard Is at His Best, Arsenal Are at Their Best’

Former Premier League defender Nedum Onuoha believes Odegaard’s influence could be crucial to Arsenal’s ambitions this season.

Onuoha said the midfielder “will want to have a bigger impact on the team this season” after a campaign in which injuries restricted his contribution.

“They have got unfinished business in the Champions League,” Onuoha said. “He wants to be the first captain of Arsenal to lift that trophy.”

He added that Arsenal reach another level when Odegaard is performing at his best.

“I think when he is at his best, Arsenal are at their best,” Onuoha said.

The former defender also praised Odegaard’s creativity, ability to retain possession and willingness to contribute defensively, particularly when operating on the right side of Arsenal’s attack.

Arteta Praises Odegaard’s Decisive Impact

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has also noticed the difference in his captain’s performances.

Arteta said Arsenal need players who are willing to take risks and influence matches, adding that Odegaard has been getting into important attacking positions more frequently.

“This is what we need: players with that mindset to decide the game, to play with that personality and keep taking risks,” Arteta said.

“It was an incredible goal.”

Arteta also highlighted the importance of Odegaard contributing goals that directly affect results.

“Martin is contributing with goals that are impacting results which is what we want from our attacking players, being decisive,” he said.

Arsenal Hope Odegaard Can Deliver in Europe

Odegaard’s form is particularly encouraging for Arsenal because the Champions League remains the major trophy missing from the club’s recent achievements.

Arsenal have previously lost Champions League finals to Barcelona in 2006 and Paris St-Germain last season. Their latest European campaign therefore represents another opportunity to overcome a barrier that has so far remained out of reach.

Last season, Arsenal managed to win the Premier League despite Odegaard appearing in only 24 league matches and contributing one goal and seven assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.

If he can maintain his current level throughout the campaign, Arsenal will have a significantly more influential captain leading their pursuit of another Premier League title and a first Champions League trophy.
