Pochettino Man City Verdict Raises Sporting Fairness Questions

Pochettino Man City verdict reaction has intensified debate over sporting fairness after Manchester City were found guilty of breaking the majority of financial rules brought against them by the Premier League.

An independent panel ruled on a wide range of charges against City, with the Athletic reporting that 114 of the 115 charges had been upheld. The sanctions have not yet been announced, while Manchester City plan to appeal against the decision Pochettino Man City verdict.

The charges cover the period from the 2009-10 season through to 2017-18. City were also accused of failing to cooperate with Premier League investigations between December 2018 and February 2023.

Mauricio Pochettino Questions Premier League Controls, Pochettino Man City verdict

Mauricio Pochettino, who managed Southampton, Tottenham and Chelsea during the period covered by the charges, said any eventual punishment could not reverse the consequences of events that had already taken place.

“Whatever punishment [they choose], it’s impossible to turn back time,” Pochettino said. “It’s done a lot of damage. Many clubs followed the rules and some didn’t.”

The United States manager said the situation had created concerns about the integrity of competition in the Premier League. He questioned how the consequences could repair what he described as damage caused over a long period.

“It is a huge sadness. We get into a situation where what got celebrated wasn’t that real, what seemed good maybe wasn’t so good, what didn’t look good maybe was good but couldn’t be good because of what happened,” he said.

Pochettino added that sporting fairness had been affected and described the period as one in which “we’ve lived through a period of deception.”

Manchester City Rule Breaches Follow Four-Year Investigation

The Manchester City rule breaches followed a four-year Premier League investigation that began before the club was formally charged in February 2023. City were then referred to an independent commission, with a behind-closed-doors hearing beginning in September 2024 and lasting around 12 weeks.

Pochettino also questioned how Premier League financial controls were applied to different clubs. He recalled his time at Southampton and Tottenham, saying Tottenham had faced strict financial restrictions while building its new stadium.

“Where were the controls?” Pochettino said. “That’s what gets my attention. Where were the controls?”

He recalled that Tottenham had been unable to make a transfer for 18 months while the club dealt with the financial demands surrounding the construction of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“I think we were the only team in the history of the Premier League with 18 months without [making a transfer],” he said.

Pochettino said Tottenham continued competing for Premier League titles and regularly finishing in the top four during that period, while also reaching the Champions League semi-finals without being able to make a transfer.

Premier League Financial Rules Under Scrutiny, Pochettino Man City verdict

Pochettino said the contrast between Tottenham’s experience and the outcome of the Manchester City charges was difficult for him to understand.

“They were so strict with us but also so lenient with others. Because of that, that’s why I say: it’s all very strange,” he said.

Earlier this month, Pochettino had also argued that Chelsea should lose the 2016-17 Premier League title following the club’s historical rule breaches. He said the championship should instead be awarded to his Tottenham side, who finished as runners-up that season.

The latest Pochettino Man City verdict comments come as other Premier League clubs consider their own responses to the independent panel’s findings. Sources told BBC Sport that some top-flight clubs are seeking legal advice over possible compensation claims following the decision against City.

Manchester City have not accepted the findings as the end of the matter and intend to appeal. Any sanctions will be announced separately, meaning the final consequences of the ruling remain to be determined.
