Sport in Brief: Major Highlights from March 9 2026

Overview

Several sporting events around the world produced exciting results and impressive performances. Competitions in netball, baseball, rugby league and darts delivered important moments as teams and athletes continued their campaigns in different tournaments and leagues.

Netball: Loughborough Lightning Move to the Top

Loughborough Lightning produced a dominant performance to defeat Leeds with a convincing 70 to 41 victory. The win placed Lightning at the top of the Netball Super League standings after the first two rounds of matches based on points difference.

Nottingham Forest also recorded an important result by defeating Birmingham 68 to 58. The victory moved Forest into second place in the league table. Defending champions London Pulse currently sit third after narrowly defeating Cardiff in a close match that finished 51 to 50.

Manchester secured a strong 69 to 59 win against London Mavericks. Eleanor Caldwell played a key role in the victory by scoring 27 goals and collecting three rebounds during the match.

Baseball: Britain Exit the World Baseball Classic

Britain’s campaign in the World Baseball Classic came to an end after a 7 to 4 defeat against Italy in Houston. Britain started the game well and took an early 2 to 0 lead in the first inning. However Italy gradually regained control and produced enough scoring opportunities to secure the win.

The result meant Britain lost all three of their opening matches in the tournament and were therefore eliminated from the competition.

Italy will now continue their campaign with upcoming matches against strong opponents including the United States and Mexico.

Meanwhile the reigning champions Japan remain unbeaten and continue their tournament schedule with another match against Czechia.

Rugby League: London Broncos Maintain Unbeaten Start

London Broncos continued their strong start to the Championship season with a comfortable 42 to 4 victory over Halifax. The win keeps the Broncos at the top of the table on points difference while they still have a game in hand over other teams.

Halifax currently remain at the bottom of the standings after receiving a 12 point deduction earlier in the season due to financial administration issues.

In other matches Widnes secured a narrow 32 to 26 victory against Hunslet, while Barrow claimed a solid 20 to 8 win over Dewsbury to move into third place in the table.

Darts: Luke Littler Wins UK Open Title

Teenage darts star Luke Littler successfully defended his UK Open title by defeating James Wade 11 to 7 in the final held in Minehead.

The match repeated last year’s championship final and once again Littler emerged as the winner. Earlier in the tournament he produced an impressive comeback in the semi final, recovering from a 5 to 1 deficit to defeat Josh Rock 11 to 9.

James Wade reached the final after defeating Gerwyn Price 11 to 8 in the other semi final.

With this latest victory the nineteen year old secured £120000 in prize money and added another major title to his rapidly growing career achievements.

Conclusion

Recent results across multiple sports have provided exciting moments for fans and highlighted strong performances from teams and individual athletes. As tournaments and leagues continue throughout the season, supporters can expect more competitive matches and memorable sporting moments
