UK Plans to Deploy Warship to Protect Military Base in Cyprus After Drone Attack

The United Kingdom is preparing to deploy a Royal Navy warship to Cyprus to help protect a key British military base following a recent drone attack in the region.

Officials confirmed that the government plans to send the air defence destroyer HMS Dragon along with helicopters equipped with counter drone technology. The move is intended to strengthen the defence of RAF Akrotiri, a major British military base on the Mediterranean island.

The decision comes after a drone strike hit the runway at the base earlier this month. The incident caused only limited damage and no casualties, but it raised concerns about the safety of British personnel stationed there.

RAF Akrotiri is one of two British sovereign military bases in Cyprus and plays an important role in operations across the Middle East. The facility has historically been used for military missions, evacuations and surveillance operations in the region.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the deployment is part of ongoing defensive operations and aims to protect both British forces and regional stability. He also confirmed that discussions had taken place with Cyprus officials regarding security on the island.

HMS Dragon is a Type 45 destroyer designed to defend against aerial threats such as missiles and drones. The warship uses advanced radar systems and missile defence technology to track and intercept airborne targets.

The recent attack on the base is believed to have involved an Iranian made drone, possibly launched by a regional militant group. The strike occurred during a period of rising tension in the Middle East linked to the broader conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

In response to the situation, several European countries have also increased their military presence near Cyprus. France and Greece have announced the deployment of additional naval vessels and air defence systems to help strengthen the island’s protection against potential attacks.

British officials say the deployment of the warship and helicopters is intended purely as a defensive measure. The government has stressed that its priority is protecting military personnel and ensuring the safety of British facilities in the region.

Security around the Cyprus base has been tightened while authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as tensions in the Middle East remain high.
