UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a press conference in London to address the escalating conflict in the Middle East and outline Britain’s response to the growing regional tensions.
During the briefing, Starmer stressed that the United Kingdom is focusing on defensive measures while urging all sides to avoid further escalation. He said the government is taking steps to protect British citizens, military personnel and national interests in the region.
The prime minister explained that British aircraft are already operating in the region as part of coordinated defensive operations aimed at protecting allies and monitoring potential threats. He emphasised that the UK has not taken part in the original US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Starmer also confirmed that the UK has strengthened its military readiness by deploying additional assets to the Middle East. These measures include relocating naval forces and reinforcing air defence capabilities around key British bases.
Speaking about the wider conflict, the prime minister called for restraint from all parties and warned that further escalation could destabilise the entire region. He said diplomatic efforts remain essential to prevent the conflict from spreading further.
Starmer also addressed concerns about British citizens in the Middle East, stating that the government is providing consular assistance and preparing evacuation arrangements where necessary.
The press conference comes amid increasing political debate over Britain’s role in the crisis. The UK government initially refused to allow American forces to use British bases for strikes on Iran but later permitted limited use for defensive purposes aimed at preventing missile attacks in the region.
The prime minister defended this approach, saying the UK’s priority is to act within international law while ensuring the safety of British nationals and allies.
As the conflict continues to develop, Starmer said the government will keep monitoring the situation closely and remain prepared to take further defensive actions if required.
