Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated after both countries exchanged strikes and issued renewed warnings, further straining already fragile diplomatic efforts. US President Donald Trump accused Tehran of deliberately delaying negotiations, warning that Iran would now “have to pay the price.” He described Iran as “completely defeated” and criticised its leadership as “all talk and no action,” though he did not provide specific details on further measures.
His comments followed a strong warning from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who said Iran would not leave any attack or threat unanswered and claimed that the United States had experienced “defeats on the battlefield.” The exchange of rhetoric came alongside a rapid military escalation in which both sides carried out and reported strikes across the region.
US officials stated that American forces launched attacks on Iranian positions after a US army helicopter was brought down in the Gulf. In response, Iran reportedly carried out strikes against US military installations across the Middle East. According to the US Central Command, Iranian air defence systems, radar facilities and ground control sites near the Strait of Hormuz were targeted in the operation.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it responded with strikes on 21 targets linked to US forces, including sites in Bahrain and Jordan. At the same time, Kuwaiti authorities confirmed they were intercepting incoming attacks as tensions spread across the Gulf region.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump intensified his criticism, claiming Iran’s military had been severely weakened and that both its navy and air force were effectively incapacitated. He added that Tehran had missed its opportunity to reach a favourable agreement and would now face consequences for its actions.
His remarks contrasted with comments made just a day earlier, when he had suggested that Washington and Tehran were close to finalising a potential deal. The Iranian foreign ministry responded by accusing the United States of undermining diplomacy through inconsistent messaging, shifting demands, and repeated violations of ceasefire arrangements. Spokesman Esmaeil Baqai said Iran would reassess its position, stressing that meaningful negotiations require stability and mutual trust.
