The conflict involving the United States Israel and Iran entered its fifth day with heavy airstrikes and retaliatory attacks continuing across the Middle East.
Joint military operations by the United States and Israel have targeted several Iranian military and government sites, including locations linked to the country’s missile programme and nuclear facilities. Military officials say hundreds of targets have been struck since the operation began.
Explosions were reported in parts of Tehran as Israeli and American forces carried out further strikes on strategic locations. The attacks form part of a wider campaign aimed at weakening Iran’s military infrastructure.
Iran has responded with large scale retaliation, launching hundreds of ballistic missiles and thousands of drones at Israeli and US related targets across the region. Some of these attacks have hit areas near diplomatic compounds and energy infrastructure in Gulf countries.
The conflict has already caused significant casualties across several countries. Reports indicate that more than one thousand people have been killed in Iran since the fighting began, while deaths have also been recorded in Lebanon and Israel.
The war has also affected military forces in the region. Six United States service members were killed during an attack on a port facility in Kuwait, marking one of the first confirmed American casualties since the escalation began.
Meanwhile the United States military confirmed that an American submarine sank an Iranian warship during naval operations in the Indian Ocean. Officials described the strike as part of efforts to weaken Iran’s naval capabilities during the ongoing campaign.
Authorities in several Middle Eastern countries have placed their defence systems on high alert as the fighting continues. Some governments have also urged citizens to leave the region due to security concerns.
The conflict began after coordinated strikes on Iranian targets at the end of February as tensions between Israel Iran and the United States escalated over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security concerns.
With both sides continuing military operations and no immediate diplomatic solution in sight, international leaders have warned that the conflict could spread further across the region if tensions continue to rise.
